When Rémi was born he was very small, extraordinarily small even for an infant. His older brother would often cruelly remark that it was incredible that his mother had been defeated by such a tiny thing. But his unassuming stature did not phase his father, he would throw him in the air with both hands, he would encourage the boy to swing from his arms, the child’s tiny hands clasped around his strong muscles, ruffling his hair roughly, darker than his and curlier too – his youngest son had hair like his Father, and Artur smiled when he was with him. Rémi was only three years old but already he reminded him of that gentle man, his soft

A man with a face like Rémi's came to me. He moved through the room and stopped by my bed.
"They say that you can help me," he spoke. His voice was deep and strong. That's when I looked at him and saw Rémi's face. But there were differences. His nose was longer and crooked, his hair lighter, his shoulders broader. I looked at him constantly, studying the details that were the same, and the ones that were different. "They say you can tell me about Rémi."
"Rémi..." I repeated. My voice was hoarse and small. It hurt to talk. He nodded firmly, his face tensed and determined.
"I need you to tell me where he is," he spoke strongly, moving towards me. "I need you to tell me how to find him." I couldn't drag my eyes away from him. I couldn't blink. "Please," he pressed. "They said you would know."
"Excuse me?" My brother's voice. He had appeared from nowhere, the way he always did. The man who moved in silence. He glared at the stranger, crossing his arms at his chest. "What are you

I followed the sound of her humming. I heard it through the house and opened the back door, poking my head hesitantly around the side. She was dancing, her slender arms outstretched and her bare feet pointed as she glided forward. She seemed to move without effort, the wind whistling through her silken dress and golden hair. Her eyes were closed as she spun on the spot, her body curving perfectly. She hopped forward quickly, but her foot twisted beneath her and she crashed to the floor roughly. I gasped and moved away from the door, my hand outstretched towards her. She looked up at me in shock and I froze in place.
"I-I'm sorry!" I stammered, my cheeks glowing red as I backed up to the house.
"Oh, Émile, little darling, don't worry!" She smiled, breathless as she laid twisted on the floor. She pushed herself up, wincing slightly. I wavered, then moved towards her. I held out my hand and she looked to it and giggled. "What a gentleman you are!" She gripped it softly and rose to

It wasn't long before they cut my arm free of the cast which bound it. The medic asked me to move my forefinger and because I managed to bend it he declared me 'fit for battle.' Rémi tried to argue against this, but the line of injured men was long and we were quickly ushered out of the hospital tent with a scowl.
But I wasn't worried. There was an optimistic buzz around camp, word was spreading fast about how the Russians were at their limit, with one stronghold remaining it was only a matter of time until the victory was declared. So for the first time in a long time, the men began to see something beyond the crumbling city and the biting Russian winter.
Rémi paced his tent slowly, his thick eyebrows narrowed as he continuingly glanced at me. Eventually I sighed and sat upright.
"Nothing's wrong," he snapped back quickly. Then he let his arms drop and muttered. "What are you going to do, lion cub? Once the war is over I mean," he looked to me. "Will you

I had walked to the throne room alone, oddly calm, my arms down at my sides and my back straight. This was something I had built up over years of dealing with stressful situations, a white mist descended over my eyes and my face was steel. There were two armed guards at the door but they were expecting me. They stepped aside and opened the doors for me. The room was as grand as I had expected, the walls were white marble laced with gold and the eyes of all the emperor's relatives, immortalised in oil paint, were upon me as I walked the vast distance towards him. Great drapes of red velvet framed him, held aloft by gold pillars which were mounted by a single 'N'. A name so powerful that it had claimed a letter as its own. But his chair was small, almost modest. Who needed an imposing throne when you need only to utter a single letter to stir emotion?
The guards came to a halt and I stopped with them. They bowed immediately and I followed their lead.
"Rise," came his voice. Finally my ga

Viktor jerked back on instinct.
"Pregnant?" He gasped. "That's impossible." I half laughed.
"I assure you, it's very possible!"
"No," he was shaking his head as he stepped back. "You're not pregnant."
"I've had morning sickness for months," I said under my breath.
"That's because you were worried about Luce," he insisted, his eyes darting.
"I thought so too," I said gently, moving towards him. "But I know the truth now."
"How can you know for sure?" He pressed. "Maybe you're just-"
"I know," I replied categorically. "I know." I touched his arm and he looked up at me. He breathed out quickly, his face stripped of all colour. He opened his mouth wordlessly. "I'm scared too," I said gently, rubbing his arm. "I...I know what happens to women who..." I looked down and swallowed hard. "But I have you." He looked across the field, his strong profile highlighted against the light of the moon.
"Yes," he spoke distantly. "We have each other."
"Right," I smiled and ran my hands down his arm to h
